Questions You Might Have.
It's completely normal to have questions before reaching out. Here are some of the things people often ask. If there's anything else on your mind, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
• What is counselling and how can it help?
Counselling is a confidential, professional relationship in which you're given space to talk openly about what's troubling you. A counsellor listens without judgement and helps you explore your thoughts, feelings, and patterns - not by giving advice, but by helping you find your own clarity and direction. Many people find it helps them feel less alone, more understood, and better equipped to cope.
• How is counselling different from talking to a friend?
A good friend is invaluable - but counselling offers something different. The relationship is entirely focused on you, without the social dynamics of friendship. A counsellor is trained to listen in a particular way, to notice patterns, agenda, or the need to share their own experiences.
• What is person-centred counselling?
Person-centred counselling is an approach that places you at the heart of the work. Rather than following a fixed programme or telling you what to do, I follow your lead - trusting that you are the expert on your own life. The relationship between us is central: warmth, honesty, and genuine understanding are the conditions in which real change tends to happen.
• How do I know if I'm ready for counselling?
There's no 'right' time to start counselling, and you don't need to be in crisis. If something is weighing on you - even if you can't quite name it - that's enough. Many people come to counselling simply feeling stuck, or sensing that something needs to change. You don't need to have it all figured out before you reach out.
• What happens in the first session?
The first session is a chance for us to meet and see how we feel together. I'll ask a little about what's brought you to counselling and what you're hoping for. There's no pressure to share more than you're comfortable with - it's as much about you getting a feel for me as it is about me understanding your situation.
• Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes. I offer a free, no-obligation initial conversation - usually around 10 minutes - so you can ask questions, get a sense of how I work, and decide whether you'd like to go ahead. There's no pressure either way.
• How much do sessions cost?
Please get in touch for current session fees. I aim to keep my fees accessible and am happy to discuss what's manageable for you.
• How often will we meet?
Most people find weekly sessions work well, especially at the start. This consistently helps build the trust and momentum that makes counselling effective. As things progress, we can review the frequency together.
• How many sessions will I need?
There's no fixed answer - it depends entirely on you and what you're working through. Some people find six to eight sessions helpful; others prefer longer-term support. We'll check in regular and you're always free to end or pause at any time.
• Are sessions online or in person?
I offer three ways to work together - online via secure video call, by telephone, or in person in South East England. Online and telephone sessions are available to anyone in the UK. Many people find these just as effective as meeting face to face, and often more convient. We can discuss what feels right for you.
• Is everything I say confidential?
Yes. Everything you share with me is held in strict confidence. The only exceptions are if I have serious concerns about your safety or the safety of someone else - and even then, I would always aim to discuss this with you first wherever posssible. I work within the NCPS ethical framework.
if you're in immediate danger, please contact emergency services (999) or go to your nearest A&E. For urgent mental health support, you can also contact the Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7). Counselling is not a crisis service, but if you're struggling between sessions, please do reach out to me.
I'm always happy to answer anything that's on your mind. Just send me a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
